Travelling the North Coast 500 in a Motorhome

NC500 Scotland

Scotland’s North Coast 500 is one of the most scenic road routes in the UK. Stretching over 500 miles around the northern coast, it takes you through rugged landscapes, quiet beaches, and charming villages. Travelling it in a motorhome is a brilliant way to take things at your own pace and enjoy the freedom of the open road.

Starting and ending in Inverness, the route passes through spots such as Applecross, Ullapool, Durness, Thurso, and John o’ Groats. The views change constantly – one minute you’re driving past a sea loch, the next you’re winding up a steep single-track with mountain backdrops.

Motorhome-Friendly Campsites Worth Considering

There are numerous places along the way where you can stop for the night, with campsites that welcome motorhomes and offer excellent facilities.

Ardtower Caravan Park

Location: Inverness, IV2 5AA

A tidy, well-kept site that’s a handy place to begin or finish your trip. It’s close to Inverness, but peaceful, with views across to the Moray Firth and just a short drive from the city centre.

Location: Gairloch, IV21 2DL

Set right by the beach in Gairloch on the west coast, this spacious site is ideal for a few days by the sea. You can walk straight onto the sand or drive to nearby viewpoints and trails.

Clachtoll Beach Campsite

Location: Lochinver, IV27 4JD

This smaller, more remote site is set near Lochinver and is ideal for anyone who wants a quiet break in nature. The beach is stunning, and the site has a relaxed, friendly feel with basic but clean facilities.

Sango Sands Oasis

Location: Durness, IV27 4PZ

A dramatic location right on the cliffs in Durness, with views over the North Atlantic. There’s a pub just next door, and it’s a short walk to Smoo Cave and Balnakeil Bay. You’ll want your camera for this one.

Dunnet Bay Caravan and Motorhome Club Site

Location: Dunnet, KW14 8XD

Located near Thurso, this peaceful site sits beside long sand dunes and a beach that stretches for miles. It’s perfect for wildlife spotting and watching the waves roll in after a long day on the road.

There’s no shortage of things to see and do on the North Coast 500. Whether you enjoy walking, wildlife, history or photography, you’ll find plenty to keep you busy.

Bealach na Bà to Applecross

This winding mountain pass is famous for its steep climbs and views. It’s best suited for confident drivers and smaller motorhomes, but it’s also very rewarding if you’re up for a challenge.

This large sea cave is open to the public and fascinating to explore. You can go partway inside on foot or take a short guided boat tour deeper into the cave, depending on water levels.

John o’ Groats and Dunnet Head

Make time to visit the most northerly point on mainland Britain and enjoy views across the sea to Orkney. Dunnet Head Lighthouse is also nearby and is a great place to stop and take in the quiet surroundings.

This grand and fairytale-like castle sits on the east coast and has stunning gardens as well as falconry displays. It’s a great contrast to the wilder stops on the west side of the route.

Useful Advice for Motorhome Travellers

  • Plan ahead but stay flexible. It’s helpful to have an idea of where you’ll stay, especially in the summer, but don’t be afraid to slow down or stay longer somewhere if you like it.
  • Stick to the official sites. Wild camping is discouraged in many areas along the route, and some roads aren’t suitable for large vehicles.
  • Use passing places properly. Some roads are single-track, and you’ll need to let others through. Locals will thank you for pulling over early.
  • Stock up when you can. Some stretches don’t have shops or fuel for a while, so keep an eye on your supplies.

The North Coast 500 offers a brilliant mix of nature, history and good old road trip fun. Travelling along it in a motorhome lets you wake up to new views every day and stop wherever catches your eye. It’s not just about the sights, either – it’s about the slow mornings by the beach, the random picnic spots with million-pound views, and the feeling of having nowhere else to be.
