Essential Tips Before You Hit the Road in a Motorhome

There’s nothing quite like the freedom of a motorhome adventure. You can chase the sunshine, stop wherever you fancy and take your home comforts along for the ride. But before you turn the key and head off, a bit of planning goes a long way.

Check Your Motorhome Inside and Out

Give your motorhome a proper once-over before you set off. Look for any leaks, test all the lights and indicators, and check tyre pressures — including the spare. Make sure the water, gas and electrical systems are working properly. A few minutes of checks before leaving can save hours of hassle later.

If you’re hiring a motorhome, don’t rush the handover. Take the time to walk through how everything works — from connecting the gas bottle to using the heating or operating the awning. When you collect your vehicle from us, we’ll show you each key feature and are always happy to answer questions. Taking photos or short videos on your phone can be a big help when you come to do it yourself on site.

Pack Smart, Not Heavy

Space in a motorhome fills up quickly. Pack only what you’ll genuinely use, and store heavier items low down to keep the centre of gravity stable. Essentials include a first-aid kit, torch, water hose, levelling blocks, spare fuses, and a small toolkit.

Soft bags are easier to store than hard suitcases, and collapsible kitchenware saves space. If you’re travelling with pets, bring a designated bed and towel for muddy paws — it’ll help keep the living area clean.

Plan Your Route (But Stay Flexible)

One of the joys of motorhome travel is freedom, but it’s still worth having a rough plan. Some rural or coastal roads are narrow and tricky for larger vehicles, so check your route in advance. Apps and sat-navs designed for motorhomes can warn you about low bridges and weight limits.

It’s also wise to book at least your first few overnight stops — especially in peak season — so you’re not left hunting for a pitch at the end of a long day.

Manage Power and Water Wisely

Your leisure battery, gas and water supply are finite. Get into the habit of conserving energy by using LED lighting and turning off devices when not in use. Refill water tanks regularly and empty waste tanks responsibly at designated sites.

If you’re off-grid for a few days, a small solar panel can keep your battery topped up — ideal for longer breaks.

Keep Documents Handy

Make sure you have all your documents ready and up-to-date: driving licence, insurance, vehicle logbook and breakdown cover details. It’s also smart to carry copies on your phone or email, just in case.

Enjoy the Journey

Motorhome travel isn’t about racing to the destination — it’s about enjoying the ride. Stop at farm shops, coastal viewpoints or country pubs. Some of the best memories come from unplanned detours and slow mornings with a view out of the window.

With a bit of preparation, every trip becomes smoother, safer and far more enjoyable. Once you’re packed, checked and ready, hit the road and let the adventure unfold — that’s what life in a motorhome is all about.
